For many organizations, especially non profits, fundraising is a big part of their operations. Derby Dolls, a roller derby league in Los Angeles, is a non profit that rely on events to fund their programs and operations. When COVID hit and all events were cancelled, they were quickly depleting their savings. Then they decided to start their first ever virtual 5K fundraiser event and we get to produce their really cool medal!

The Design

When the Derby Dolls came to us to create their virtual 5K medal, they had a clear vision: to make it cool, fun and smashing just like their events! Their design team had a rough vision and we were asked to adopt the design in 3D. As part of our process, we went to work to make adjustments on their current design for a 3D race medal. A 3D rendering were sent to the client for approval. This gives them a better picture how the virtual 5K medal for the fundraiser will come out. Once it is approved our production team went right to work.

The Production

Have you ever wondered how colors got on our race medals? First our graphics department will indicate the colors using Pantone color system, then our production department will mix the specified Pantone color. Each area on the medal is manually filled with precision and care by our expert staff. The process repeats for each medal and each color. That is part of the reason why medal making can be a time-consuming process!

After 2-3 weeks of hard work the medals are done, and are ready to be distributed to our client!

The Derby Dolls leveraged on its large social media presence to market this race. Being virtual also means that anyone can enter, even if you are not in the LA area. The wider audience can increase your fundraising goals, so long as it is well planned and executed. They also posted a picture of the finished medal to increase registrations. A successful fundraiser marketing strategy can be a combination of social media, email newsletter and snail mail.
